The Vietnam War
By this time the Vietnam War was not going well for the Americans. President Nixon had been elected two years earlier, and he soon began decreasing amount of soldiers. The protesters were losing enthusiasm, and America's involvement was coming to a close. During the Vietnam War, America really didn't have much of a choice in winning the war. If they invaded Hanoi or Haiphong, then the Chinese would step into the war. They couldn't just keep the North Vietnamese Army at bay, for they would be there forever and North Vietnam could just keep doing nuisance attacks, while America had to defend South Vietnam. Also, North Vietnam was creating bases in Cambodia and Laos, which were neutral. America had to invade Cambodia and Laos, to try to flush out North Vietnamese bases.
This map shows the route of the Cambodian Incursion, which was an effort to destroy all the bases that Vietnam had placed in Cambodia because they knew Cambodia was neutral and did not have a big armed force.
