The Anti-Vietnam War Protesters
The protesters had lost enthusiasm while American forces withdrew. Yet one day changed it all. On the last day of a four day protest (May 4, 1970) a group of protesters at Kent State, Ohio, were holding a demonstration. National Guardsmen were there, trying to hold back the crowds. They were pushed past their level of tolerance, and the National Guard fired into the crowd. Four students were killed, and another nine were wounded. This event shocked America, and hundreds of college campuses closed down.
This war in Vietnam is,
I believe, a war for
civilization. Certainly
it is not a war of our
seeking. It is a war
thrust upon
us and we cannot
yield to tyranny.
