The Fall of Saigon
Two years earlier, the United States withdrew from Vietnam, leaving only the South Vietnamese to defend their home. President Thieu ordered the army to defend the capital city of Saigon. After inflicting severe casualties on the North Vietnamese, they gave in, and Saigon was conquered. It was later renamed Ho Chi Minh City, in honor of their political leader.
Nguyen Van Thieu, previously a North Vietnamese general, defected to South Vietnam, and after the previous president Ngo Dinh Diem died, (Ngo Dinh Diem was killed by his own military officials, and the United States did not object. He was assassinated because he was a corrupt leader) Thieu became president. After America withdrew, he ordered a retreat to defend Saigon. North Vietnam eventually broke through the defense and won the war.
